A GoFundMe has been created photographer Rick Rarer after he was struck by a Sprint Car on Monday night at Wayne County Speedway while covering the All Star Circuit of Champions’ Ohio Sprint Speedweek event.
Rarer was one of three struck in the infield of Wayne County Speedway on Monday night during the B feature for the All Star Circuit of Champions. The Apple Creek East Union Township Fire Department shared in a press release that it “responded to an incident … during Ohio Sprint Speed Week at Wayne County Speedway involving a sprint car that left the racing surface and struck spectators located within the infield area of the track.”
“Three spectators sustained injuries as a result of the incident,” the Fire Department continued. “Two patients suffered critical injuries and required advanced medical care. One critically injured patient was transported by Apple Creek Fire Department, while a second critically injured patient was airlifted from the scene by MedFlight. A third patient sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported by Orrville Fire Department, who responded to provide mutual aid assistance.”
Rarer shared on Facebook that he underwent surgery on his leg and suffered “some concussions, brain bleeds and a bunch of broken ribs” but was “doing ok.”
He also shared that he would have to undergo another surgery on his leg that was originally scheduled for Friday, but was subsequently moved to Monday.
Additionally, he shared the damage his equipment took from the incident.
A GoFundMe for Rarer’s recovery has been setup by Lisa Feltenberger, who shared more details on his injuries noting that he is “facing a long road to recovery” and “will be unable to work for quite sometime while he heals.”
Feltenberger added, “Along with the physical challenges ahead he will also be dealing with ongoing doctor appointments, treatments and medical expenses. Since he won’t be able to work, he will be without the income he normally relies on during this difficult time.”
In an update posted on Friday, June 19th, Feltenberger also shared that Rick “found out that his medical insurance is out of network since the accident happened in Ohio.”
The GoFundMe is attempting to raise $13,000. It has raised approximately $9,000 so far.
