The Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200 at South Boston Speedway promises a battle royale on Saturday, June 27th as the best late model stock car drivers will compete for the first jewel in the Virginia Triple Crown.
The crown jewel event has attracted 47 entries, but only 40 cars will start the race. In order to determine who those 40 cars will be, all competitors will compete in qualifying with the top 34 being locked in. The remaining 13 cars will compete in a 20-lap last chance race, where the top four cars will advance into the 200-lap main event. The track has also reserved two promoters provisionals for the final two spots to complete the 40-car field.
As for the main event, it will be split into four different stages that also includes a halfway break where teams will get 10 minutes to work on the car including putting in fuel and changing two tires. The first stage will end on lap 50, but they will continue to race under green flag. The second stage ends on lap 100 where the 10-minute halfway break will commence. The third stage will end on lap 150, but like the first stage they will continue to race under the green flag.
Caution laps will count except during the halfway break and in the final 10 laps of the race. If the caution comes out at the end of the race there will be three attempts at a green, white, checkered overtime.

Notably the field includes Lee Pulliam, who will be racing the No. 8 for JR Motorsports. Pulliam is a six-time winner of the event. He won it six times in a row from 2011 to 2016. This year will be the first time he will compete in the race since 2019. Not only is he a six-time race winner, but he’s a two-time Virginia Late Model Triple Crown winner as well as a South Boston track champion. In fact, he has 52 career wins at the track including a win this year in the 100-lap season opener in March.
“This is a special racetrack for me. Thatβs where everything started for me and where my career got going,” Pulliam said. “It was really special to get a win here to start the year off after having been gone for so many years and know I can still get it done with these great competitors.”
βIβm really confident,β Pulliam declared. βI feel really good going into the race. Iβm in the best shape Iβve been in in a long time physically and mentally. I feel like between what I know as a driver and crew chief and with what those guys (at JR Motorsports) bring to the table itβs going to be a real cool combination.β
Two-time race winner and eight-time South Boston Speedway track champion Peyton Sellers also returns to add another win to his belt, and he believes he has an advantage after scoring three wins at the track already this year.
βJust knowing the track and how itβs trending at night versus daytime racing helps,β Sellers explained. βA lot of the CARS Tour guys are used to a little different rulebook and have to change their cars around to come here, so it will be a different element.β
He also expects the race to “be a dogfight for 200 laps. Competition at South Boston Speedway is as good as it has ever been right now. Trevor [Ward[ and Landon [Pembelton, who sits second in the SBS Late Model points] have come on strong in the last month.”
βTo be standing in Phillip Morris Victory Lane with the fireworks going off and getting your picture taken β thatβs special,β added Sellers. βThatβs cool. Iβd like to be doing that.β
Other previous winners in the field include Bobby McCarty and Connor Hall. McCarty is a two-time winner winning in 2021 and 2023. Hall is the two-time defending winner of the race, winning in both 2024 and 2025. He went on to win the Virginia Triple Crown in 2025 as well.
βI thought two (wins) was ultra cool and really special,β Hall said, βand I feel three would just be the cherry on top. I feel that would be a pretty big statement.β
βThe ‘200’ always has produced good racing,β he pointed out. βSouth Boston is one of the few tracks that youβll have guys running all the way on the flat, on the apron, and guys running the third groove. Itβs just super racy by the end of it. Itβs a really fun race to watch how it all shakes out.β
The 200-lap race pays $10,000 to-win and the winner will also receive a guaranteed starting spot for the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway in September. The track opens its pit gates at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 27th. The frontstretch and spectator gates open at 11:30 a.m.
Racing action begins with a practice session at 1 p.m. Qualifying will start at 3:35 p.m. The drivers will then take part in an on-track autograph session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Pre-race ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with the green flag for the first race flying at 7 p.m. Along with the 200-lap Thunder Road Harley-Davidson crown jewel race, the card also features a 40-lap Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division race, a 20-lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division race, and a 20-lap Dollar General Hornets Division race.
Adult tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 each. The price increases to $25 at the gate on race day. Kids age 12 and under are free. Seniors ages 65 and older, veterans and military personnel, first responders, healthcare workers and students with ID may purchase tickets for $20 each at the gate on race day.
