Brandon Overton was in contention to get the win at Senoia Raceway with the Southern Nationals and even went to the lead following a late race restart with 13 to go, but unfortunately after contact with Ashton Winger he broke.
On a restart with 13 laps left in the 44-lap feature, Overton dove to the bottom coming out of 4 and was able to get a full car length ahead of Winger coming down the front stretch and then slid through 1 and 2. Winger was able to turn underneath him coming off of 2 and they went three-wide with Donald McIntosh, who stuck the bottom, down the back stretch. Heading into 3, the two would pull ahead of McIntosh and then began beating and banging against each other’s doors as they moved down the track. Going through the middle of the corner, Overton came up lame, drew the caution, and exited the race ending his chance at a win.
Overton shared on Facebook following the race that he broke a left rear axle and steering rack. He wrote, “Southern Nationals at Senoia tonight. Passing for the lead and broke a left rear axle and steering rack after contact
.”
Winger addressed the contact in his victory lane interview albeit it appears he believes that Donald McIntosh was Cody Overton, “I don’t know what happened there with me, Brandon, and Cody. Brandon slid me and I tried to get turned and pointed as early as I could. I thought I was coming down the hill, but Cody was there and I didn’t want to clip him in the right rear. Man, stuff’s just happening so fast. I’m not dumb, the caution was for Brandon and I made contact with him so if that was all on me I apologize and he’s one of the best guys in the pits. That’s one of the last guys you want to get into it with.”
It is unclear where Overton will race next. The next race on his website’s schedule is the North/South 100 at Florence Speedway from August 6-8. However, it is quite possible that he continues with the Southern Nationals as they head to Sugar Creek Raceway on Thursday, July 23rd, North Georgia Speedway on July 24th, and Tazewell Speedway on July 25th.
