Brody Smith shared his reaction to the spin involving Bobby Pierce during their first heat on preliminary night at Shelby County Speedway for the Silver Dollar Nationals with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

With 7 laps left in the heat race, Pierce closed right up to Smith’s rear before throwing a slider into turn 3. He came across Smith’s nose as he appeared to be preparing to cross him over. Contact was made and Smith went around.

Pierce would go on to win the race, and spoke with Ben Shelton about the incident saying, “I don’t know. On a track like that you got to go for it with this format. Got to get all the points you can get. When you start up front you better win your heat race.”

“I don’t know. I probably was kinda late on the slider, but I kinda hit the slick spot and slid up. So I apologize to the 17 for that. Really hated to see the caution was on him,” Pierce continued. “I kinda felt him hit me in the bumper and next thing I know caution was out. He was spun around. So that sucks, but it’s part of racing. It’s part of these little 1/4 mile black dirt tracks. And you got to be ready for it.”

Pierce would go on to finish second his Round 2 heat, which earned him enough points to start on the front row outside of Ricky Thornton Jr.

Smith ended up finishing at the rear of the heat in 11th and then he didn’t start his Round 2 heat. He reacted to the spin in a post to Facebook writing, “Well, yesterday was… eventful.”

“I’ve seen a lot of posts and comments about my heat race so I just wanted to say this. Racing is emotional, things happen fast and sometimes situations don’t go the way any of us would like,” he continued. “I’m not here to bash anyone or start drama. Those who were there saw what happened and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I’m choosing to focus on moving forward, learning from it, and getting ready for tonight’s race.”

From there he thanked all those supporting him as well as his sponsors, “I appreciate everyone who has reached out and supported me. It’s pretty cool seeing people that I used to compete with back at home cheering me on and standing beside me. Thank you to all my amazing partners and everyone who keeps this deal going we have speed just need to polish a few things up.”

Smith is slated to start at the rear of the 10-lap Fast Shafts B-Main #1 tonight, where only the top two drivers will transfer. He will be battling against Mike Marlar, Jacob Hobscheidt, Kyle Bronson, his brother Brenden Smith, Josh Rice, Chris Madden, Jeff Tharp, J.T. Wasmund, Brandon Conkwright, Andrew Kosiski, Curt Schroeder, and Mike Morton Jr.

If he is unable to get into the first two spots and advance to the feature, he will compete in the All Makes Collision Center Non-Qualifier race. Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series director Rick Schwallie explains how it works, “The Non-Qualifier is an exciting part of the Silver Dollar Nationals because it gives drivers one final opportunity to make the feature event. The added decision of taking the $3,000 winner’s check or giving it up for a spot in the A-Main creates a dramatic storyline for both the competitors and the fans.”
