Sometimes real life provides moments you couldn’t script better in fiction.

That was exactly the case Tuesday night at Attica Raceway Park’s Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic presented by dac Vitamins and Minerals. The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars came to town for the event saluting an Ohio legend during a huge week of Ohio Sprint Car racing at the home of “Ohio’s Finest Racing.”

In other words, it’s a pretty big night for Ohio.

And the “Buckeyes” were treated to an evening they’ll never forget. Findlay, OH’s own Bryce Lucius shocked the entire sport by upsetting the best of the best for his first World of Outlaws victory. A stacked field of 49 Sprint Cars checked in at the 1/3 mile, and Lucius came out on top of a wild 40-lap Feature.

Lucius passed Carson Macedo for the top spot in traffic, but then Kyle Larson took control and looked like he was heading for a record-tying fourth win at “The Doty.” But disaster struck for the defending NASCAR Cup Series champion when he tripped up in Turns 3 and 4 and went flipping. That handed Lucius the lead with eight laps to go, and the 19-year-old looked like a veteran as he held off Logan Schuchart in the closing circuits and sent the Attica stands into bedlam when he took the checkered flag.

“I don’t even know how to explain it. This is awesome,” said a shocked Lucius. “This is unbelievable. Kyle basically outdrove me. I feel like he was going to win that until he hit the rut. I just can’t say enough about this. It’s our third night back together and everything. This is just awesome. I’m speechless.”

Lucius becomes the 157th different winner in Series history. It was only his 19th career Feature start with The Greatest Show on Dirt. He’s the 27th different victor of the Brad Doty Classic through 36 completed editions. He’s now the 17th different driver from Ohio to win with the World of Outlaws, joining a legendary list consisting of Dave Blaney, Jac Haudenschild, Sheldon Haudenschild, Rick Ferkel, Brad Doty, Dale Blaney, Danny Smith, Kenny Jacobs, Chad Kemenah, Jack Hewitt, Frankie Kerr, Greg Wilson, Randy Ford, Johnny Beaber, Rick Ungar, and Dean Jacobs. It’s Lucius’ fourth career Attica triumph to go along with a trio of local scores.

Schuchart settled for the runner-up spot aboard the Shark Racing No. 1S, his best result in the Brad Doty Classic.

Michael “Buddy” put the Roth Motorsports No. 83 on the podium at “The Doty” for the second year in a row with a third-place run.

Tanner Thorson and David Gravel completed the top five.
