Cade Dillard provided more details as to why he did not lift and drove through Garrett Alberson during the B feature preliminary for the Topless 100 on Friday night.
Following a restart with 18 laps to go, Alberson got a run going into turn 1 and slid Dillard for the lead coming out of turn 2. Dillard appeared to slip up a little bit entering turn 1, but was able to gather the momentum back up and attempted to cross Alberson over, but ended up making contact with Alberson’s left rear and driving him into the outside wall. Somehow Alberson’s car didn’t flip, but helicoptered back down the track and was hit by Daulton Wilson.

Following the wreck, Dillard told FloRacing, “That Garret, once again, proves how big of an idiot he is. Every time he buckles his helmet on he tears somebody up. He got me at Cedar Lake. Last week tore up Jake Timm. Every time you see him on the track, he’s tearing somebody’s stuff up. I’m not going to say it on here and go on a rampage and cuss, nothing like that, but you’re tired of racing with idiots like that. You work way too hard to get out here and put your stuff in a position to be upfront like this and every time I’m around him he hits my race car. So I hope they have to send his back to the jig. If he touches me again, I’ll total him out again.”
Following the race, Dillard provided more comments to FloRacing’s Kyle McFadden, “I mean, he spent half the corner right there in the middle. And we got our momentum up, and then I seen he’s coming up. I attempted to turn down, but once I’ve seen we’re making contact, no, I didn’t lift. Everybody just sees what happened tonight, but it’s been two or three times throughout the year we’ve got run over by the same 58 car. We just got to the point, I was over it. And the amount of drivers and crew guys that came over and talked about they’re glad somebody did it, I think there’s a lot of people that feel the same way.”
Dillard added, “I mean, typically, whenever under green flag racing, if you’re not anywhere close to the leader, typically, you don’t do something like that on a restart either. But you know, hindsight’s 20-20. It is what it is at this point. For years, I’ve got my butt chewed by my car owner for just getting ran over and never doing anything about it. And I went and told [Alberson] at Cedar Lake after he hit us lap one, turn one, that I was over that. Like I said, once I’ve seen that we were making contact, no, we definitely didn’t lift.”
“He did it to us at Wheatland, too. He’s just … a nice guy and his car has speed, just when he puts a helmet on, he just kind of turns into — I’m not gonna say anything bad there — just loses his mind a little bit, drives over his head a lot,” Dillard stated. “Once again, like I said, when you got that many other racers come by and talk about it, you know, I’d say there’s several people feels the same way.”
He then justified his actions by claiming he had warned Alberson after the USA Nationals, “Like I said, I warned (Alberson) at Cedar Lake, if you do anything stupid, there would be the consequences. He kind of messed around and found out there.”
As for Alberson, he told FloRacing after the wreck, “I’m not really sure there. I know Cade’s mad. We’ve had our run-ins. I got a hell of a run down that front straightaway. Got an excellent start. I didn’t even see him. By the time we got to turn 1, I didn’t even see him no more so I just eased my way out there. And heck, he hit me in the left rear so I must have gone by him, you know.”
“I’m just trying to use the speed that we got to get the lead. The clean air is important here,” he continued. “I felt really, really good. I was just trying to bide my time and take care of my tire there. I don’t know. I’ll have to see the replay there. Maybe I screwed it up, I don’t know, but I just have to see the replay. Just hate it for my guys. I think that thing’s probably junk. It is what it is. Just thanks to our sponsors for staying with us. I just guess I got to do a better job here.”
After watching the replay, he told FloRacing’s Kyle McFadden, “I watched that replay. I had him clear by at least a car length. By the time he could see me, I was clear by a car length. And I’ve been slid hundreds of times — close, not close. The game is, that’s the game. In this game, we throw slide jobs and we try to break people’s rhythms. And you go again. And if he wanted to race me, then we could’ve raced. I don’t know. What took place there, I’m pretty disappointed for him. The thing I’m happy about tonight is, I can go to sleep knowing I did my job and I’ve taken account for my mistakes in the past. If he can go to sleep feeling good about himself, I think he has some issues he needs to work on.”
He also shared that he apologized to Dillard after the USA Nationals after the two made contact and Alberson went around, “You know, I’ve made my mistakes and I can admit that. I went into the grease there at Cedar Lake and hit him in the left-front. But if you watch that replay real close, I was on the brakes when I hit him. There’s a big difference, in my opinion, between being on the brakes, knowing you messed up and being able to admit you messed up. I even admitted to him, I know I messed up. But what happened tonight was on a totally different level.”
Alberson would also reiterate, “He needs to look inside himself right there. He could’ve hurt me and other people in that field. We both have kids. He has kids. I would never do that to somebody like that. He was in the gas while I was flying through the air. Yeah, just, maybe he has a different view. What I saw there and what I know in my heart is that I feel pretty disrespected. Yeah, what’s gone on between him and I is on a totally different level than what he did right there. Hopefully he can sleep good.”
Both Alberson and Dillard will be back in action as they attempt to qualify for the Topless later tonight. Alberson will be in a backup car. Coverage begins on FloRacing at 8:15 PM ET.
