World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series points leader David Gravel started off the night at Jacksonville Speedway very strong, but during the feature he had an up-and-down race, but was eventually able to salvage to a fifth place finish.

Gravel recapped the night saying, “Started off great, going quick time, ran second in the heat. I drew my pill in the Dash, did a terrible job, and drew an 8. Went 8 to 6 in the Dash. They did a bunch of track rework.”

As for the feature, he shared, “I felt like I got a good start there in the feature. And the 7 car jumped and bounced, tried to dodge him, and didn’t gain any spots there. And then when we got going I was running the bottom. Ran the bottom a little bit too long. And then the 7 spun out in front of me, made contact with him, and then the 6 drove into my left side ’cause he pry had nowhere to go. Bent the nerf bar pretty bad, but on the open red the guys cut the nerf bar on the side.”

“We fell back to 9th at that point and gained 1 or 2 spots and these guys got together in front of me: the 7 and somebody else I think it was Joel Myers Jr. And we were 6th on the restart and then Sheldon and Buddy were battling and got to fifth,” he continued. “So really happy to finish fifth with how that was with falling back to 9th.”

With the 5th place finish, Gravel saw his points lead over Carson Macedo shrink from a 104 point advantage ahead of the race to now just a 94 point lead with Macedo getting the win. He did extend his lead over Kofoid, who finished a spot behind him in 6th. He has a 118 point advantage over him now.

Sheldon Haudenschild’s fourth place finish moved him to fourth in points, 186 behind Gravel, ahead of 7th place finishing Donny Schatz, who is now 190 points behind Gravel.

Gravel will be in action next when the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series heads to Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa on Saturday May 23rd for the first part of the World of Outlaws Stars and Stripes Salute. He’ll then head to Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, South Dakota for the second part of the event.
