Devin Moran put on a clinic at All-Tech Raceway in the second race of the season with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.
Moran qualified 5th in Group A and started third in the first heat race. He would work his way past both Tyler Wyant and Cory Hedgeock to win the heat and claim the pole in the feature.
Once the green flag dropped, Moran kept the lead and quickly began checking out. While he began checking out, there were some wild moves behind him especially on the initial start. Carson Ferguson jumped to the outside and went from 6th to third. On the next lap, Clay Harris went from 8th to 2nd. Coming out of turn two he went three-wide with Ferguson and Whitener. Last night’s winner Brandon Sheppard would drop back to seventh early while Brandon Overton, who started in 10th, worked his way quickly into the top 5.
The race would go green all the way and Moran lapped nearly the entire field. By the end of the race there were only 8 cars left on the lead lap. While Moran continued to pick’em and put’em down, Brandon Sheppard began working his way back to the front and eventually secured a fourth place finish. Josh Rice was the race’s hard charger. He moved up 15 spots from 25th to finish in 10th. Ricky Thornton Jr. also worked his way through the field he moved up 11 spots from 18th to finish in 7th.
Moran was never threatened the entire race. However, Clay Harris did close an over 5 second gap in the closing laps, but it was too little too late to challenge Moran and he cruised to the win.
In victory lane, Moran was all smiles, “I could maneuver really, really well. They threw them crumbs out off the bottom and I could run that middle really, really well. But this place is so tricky. The way the dirt is and the way it is if you get too sideways you feel like you’re going to spin out. Just gotta drive it like an asphalt, but spin. It’s Florida, baby. I love All-Tech.”
“To make the strides that we did last week compared to this week just shows how hard my crew guys have worked. I think Roger was ready to fire me, and I was about ready to quit after last week. We were just struggling so bad at one of my favorite tracks over there at Volusia,” Moran added.
As for Clay Harris, who took it home in second, he admitted that he didn’t send it as hard as he did last night, where he ended up in the outside wall while running in second. He told FloRacing’s Ben Shelton, “I didn’t quite send it as hard as yesterday. They told me I need to have a little bit more patience.”
Nevertheless, he added, “Them last five laps. They threw the five laps to go I just started driving as hard as I could at the bottom. I’d run him down a little bit, but them lap cars were hard to get by.”
