Eli Johnson had a solid weekend going at West Virginia Motor Speedway having got his best finish of the year with the Outlaws on Friday night with a 12th place finish. Unfortunately, his Saturday night ended in disaster.

After qualifying 8th in Group A and eventually racing into the feature through the first Last Chance Showdown, Johnson started the feature in 19th. He fell two positions early to 21st, but was making laps battling with the likes of Tyler Carpenter and Dustin Sorensen. However, on lap 16, Johnson broke and significantly slowed on the front straightaway. Dustin Sorensen, who was running behind him, smashed into his rear. For good measure, Ryan Gustin also slammed into his rear as well.

Johnson explained that he broke a driveshaft in a post following the race. He wrote, “Unfortunately our run in the A main end early. No fault of anyone’s, the driveshaft broke causing a pile up. We hate it for the other competitors tonight that were involved.”

Despite the broken driveshaft and ensuing wreck, Johnson made it clear he and his team do not plan on giving up, “there’s ZEO giving up and QUIT!”

Johnson and the Outlaws are back in action this upcoming weekend at 141 Speedway for the two-night Maribel Late Model Showdown. On Friday night, they will race 40 laps  for $12,000 to-win. On Saturday, they will run 60 laps for $25,000 to-win.

Joining the Outlaws on the card on Friday will be IMCA Stock Cars. On Saturday, they will be joined by the Stock Cars and IMCA Sport Mods. Johnson will look to replicate and improve upon his Friday night at West Virginia Motor Speedway and better his best finish of the year.
