Ethan Dotson made it abundantly clear he is not a fan of the “California Cowboy” nickname that has been bestowed upon him while also sharing the one track that he wants added to the World of Outlaws Late Model Series schedule.

Dotson shared that he has no clue where the California Cowboy nickname came from, “I don’t know. I really don’t.” However, he speculated that the World of Outlaws Late Model Series announcer Ruben Mireles made it up, “I guess Ruben did, yeah.”

He also made it clear he does not like it. When asked if he does, he bluntly stated, “No.”  If there was another he might prefer, he said, “No. Ethan. The one my mom gave me I guess.”

Along with expressing displeasure for the nickname, Dotson did share that he would like to see Whynot Motorsports Park located in Meridian, Mississippi added to the World of Outlaws Late Model Series schedule, “Whynot, I’d say there. A few others. There’s so many race tracks and I feel like we go to a lot of  [crap]holes. I don’t understand it. But I guess they draw a bigger crowd or think they do. But I’d like to see Whynot, there’s some places up towards Minnesota that have good tracks and stuff. I feel like there’s a lot that we miss out on.”

Dotson also explained why Whynot is his favorite track, “It gets a super gnarly cushion on the fence, but then the bottom’s just as fast. Every time I’ve been there it’s always been racy all over it. That’s what I like about it. I feel like they never miss. It never rubbers up. It’s usually always racy.”

Whynot Motorsports Park

The last time the World of Outlaws Late Model Series was at Whynot Motorsports Park was back in April 2018. Brandon Sheppard won the preliminary race for the Queen City Shootout while Billy Moyer Jr. won the Saturday night race.

The series made its debut at the track in March 2017. Brandon Sheppard won that race.

The track’s premiere Super Late Model event is the Coors Light Fall Classic that has been run since 1995. It will take place on October 23-24 this year. The Friday night event will feature twin 30-lap races each paying $3,000 to the winner. There will then be a 60-lap finale on Saturday night paying $20,000 to-win and $800 to start. Ashton Winger won the race last year. Dotson finished second last year.

The race typically attracts some of the top late model talent especially from the South. Along with Winger and Dotson, the field also featured Zack Mitchell, Joseph Joiner, Cade Dillard, Brandon Overton, Jadon Frame, Trey Mills, Tyler Erb, Oakley Johns, Dennis Erb Jr., Drake Troutman, Garrett Alberson, Kaede Loudy, Neil Baggett, Clay Harris, and more.

The winner’s list includes a who’s who of Dirt Late Model racing including: Scott Bloomquist, Mike Marlar, Dennis Erb Jr., Devin Moran, Spencer Hughes, Randy Weaver, Shane Clanton, Don O’Neal, Jonathan Davenport, Brian Birkhofer, and Randle Chupp among others.

The Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series was supposed to run at the track at the beginning of May, but both nights of racing were rained out. The series did race at the track at the end of March in 2025. Dalton Cook won the race and bagged the $8,000 check. The doubleheader in 2024 was rained out. In 2023, they had a doubleheader towards the end of June. Trey Mills won the Friday night race while Neil Baggett won on Saturday.
