After recovering from an eye injury suffered during the North-South 100 at Florence Speedway, Garrett Alberson and his Ken and Beth Roberts Motorsports team made the haul to compete with the World of Outlaws during World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
It has been more than 10 years since Alberson last competed at the track. His one and only trip to the track for World Finals was back in 2015 where he unfortunately did not qualify for the two races he attempted to run.
While it’s been more than 10 years since he last ran at the track, Alberson was relishing the opportunity to continue to get seat time, race against the best in the business, and compete for wins after being out of the car for six weeks earlier this year.
Alberson put down a solid lap in his first round of qualifying that sets the heat race lineups for Thursday night. He ran a lap of 14.872, which was good for 12th in Group A. That will have him line up fourth in Heat 3. Joining him in that heat are Brandon Overton, Jordan Koehler, Kyle Strickler, Bobby Pierce, Todd Morrow, Jason Riggs, Evan Koehler, Barrett Lowe, Austin Holcombe, Mathew Porter, and Eli Johnson.
“We didn’t do bad the first qualifying there. I was having a hard time kinda turning at the end of the straightaways so I didn’t make the prettiest laps there. I think we ended up 12th in that first night’s deal. So not bad. We’ll start fourth in a heat or something.”
However, qualifying for Friday night did not go as planned and has him buried deep in Heat 4. He will start 13th, dead last. The rest of the heat includes Chris Ferguson, Braden Jones, Tyler Erb, Trent Ivey, Austin Smith, Todd Morrow, Jamison McBride, Benji Hicks, Dennis Erb Jr., Donovan Jackson, Seth Zacharias, and Brian Ledbetter.
Alberson explained what happened that has him buried in his heat race, “We was lined up there for our second day’s qualifying and not enough oil pressure. So, I’m afraid that that first run hurt this motor a little bit. Luckily, we didn’t scatter it. Sheppard like had a big time blow up there.”
“Just the way the format worked out, we ended up having to pull our warm up boards really early and they were cooling off a bunch by the time we actually pulled on the track so I don’t think that’s very good for them,” Alberson continued. “Kinda bummed out we didn’t even get a lap for our Friday deal there. So, we’re going to be buried in that deal. We’ll have to see how it goes. Luckily, we didn’t totally scatter the motor.”
Alberson went on to share that he was planning to change out the motor, “I think we’re just going to swap this motor out. Definitely found some trash in the Oberg. So we’re going to change the motors out and be safe.”
