Gunnar Walls issued an apology following a last lap wreck during the Limited Late Models feature at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday.
Coming to the checkered flag, Walls threw a massive slider into turn 3 under leader Ryan Zook. However, Zook turned underneath of him coming through the middle of the corner. As he gained a half car advantage, Walls car veered to the left into Zook’s right rear making significant contact as they came across the line.
Zook would win the race, but was sent flying into the outside wall at the end of the front stretch and the beginning of turn 1. After making contact, he came back down onto the track. Meanwhile, Walls spun into the inside wall and then bounced off it back up on to the track creating a gauntlet of misery for the rest of the field.

Following the race, Walls issued a statement on Facebook apologizing and claiming that something in his steering broke. He wrote, “First off I want to say this looks really bad on me as a driver coming off 4 to the checkered flag. Something in my steering caused me to hook left and not be able to turn it back which unfortunately took out many good cars and myself.”
“I want to say I’m sorry for everything that is torn up and I totally understand everyone’s frustration but I just want to say it was not intentional at all,” he added. “Something broke and I’m not sure what as of now.”
“Really frustrated at myself for something like that happening. I really apologize for everyone involved and I’m willing to talk about it to clear things up,” he concluded.
Ryan Zook is not buying that claim. He made in his own post to Facebook, “As far as the on track incident the 85 has his story and he is going to continue to stick to it. I know personally it would be hard for me to even show my face at a race track after making a decision like that.”
“I hate it for my guys and all my great sponsors and supporters. As of now we have no real plan as to when we will be back. That was a total loss for our team,” he stated.
Zook also shared that he was okay and praised his safety equipment, “First and foremost I would like to thank everyone that has reached out and also stuck around last night to help the guys get everything taken care of. I would also like to thank Simpson racing products and Rocket Chassis for building such safe cars and equipment. Thankfully everything did its job last night.”
“I will be sore for a little while but it could have ended much worse. I would also like to thank port royals safety crew for being so good,” he wrote.
