Jimmy Owens has been conspicuously absent from Speedweeks this year and it’s led to questions as to what he’s up to, where is he at, and what his plans are for 2026.
His team owner Bobby Koehler shared some details about what Owens’ plans are with FloRacing’s Kevin Kovac indicating that he was looking at running the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, but the request came in too late and Koehler was unable to budget the finances for a second team on the tour.
Nevertheless, Koehler did share that Owens still has Koehler-owned equipment at his shop in Tennessee and he did budget for Owens to “spot race” or pick-and-choose throughout 2026.
Additionally, he revealed that if Owens is able to find a Lucas Oil Series ride, he would provide him with backing.
Owens responded to this reporting with a post to Facebook, “We’re still trying to finalize plans for 2026, but hopefully you’ll see the “Newport Nightmare” at the track again soon.”
“If you are interested in supporting #Team20 in any way, we are actively seeking additional partners and product support for this season and beyond,” the team added. “Contact Jimmy or feel free to message this page!”
On Owens’ website he indicates he is “not planning on [competing in] Speedweeks” and there are no dates listed at all.
Owens had a pretty successful 2025. He had 6 wins, 31 top 5s and 44 top 10s and won the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series Championship beating Cory Hedgeock by 30 points. Three of his six wins came with the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series and he had 9 top 5s and 10 top 10s with the series. His three wins with the series came at Sugar Creek Raceway, Senoia Raceway, and Duck River Raceway Park.
His other three wins on the year came at Lake Cumberland Speedway with the Spring Nationals, a National 100 prelim race at East Alabama Speedway, and a modified win at Volunteer Speedway.
Outside of his Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series Championship, he competed with the Big Frog Motorsports team in the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals series where he finished third in points. He was also the runner-up in the Coltman Farms Cup behind Garrett Smith.
