Kevin Harvick weighed in on where he stands regarding the debate surrounding Carson Hocevar and shared what he would do if he was still racing in the NASCAR Cup Series today.

On his weekly podcast, SPEED with Harvick and Buxton, Harvick said, “Well, I’ve been on both sides of the fence. I’ve been on the side of the fence where I didn’t give a crap about what anybody thought, ran over everybody, and then balance that out to having to deal with the younger generation. Our sport has a funny way of teaching those lessons from the veterans to the young guys.”

“At some point, you have to stand up for yourself, as Blaney tried to do in this particular moment,” Harvick continued. “And you hear a lot of guys talking about what they’re going to do, what they think of it, but they never do anything. At some point if you’re that fed up with it, you just got to wreck him. And you got to do it aggressively, and you got to stand behind it. That’s the thing that reaches to a boiling point.”

“Because right now, Hocevar’s got them all sucked into his game. And they’re all having to talk about Carson. They’re all having to talk about his driving style. And nobody’s doing anything about it on the race track,” he added.

Harvick then pointed to Josh Berry and Ryan Preece exchanging words and hand gestures following the fight with Blaney. 

“You saw the other drivers: Preece and Josh Berry kinda chirping at him after the race. At some point, you just have to do it, right? Like you have to be the one that takes control of the situation. And you have to use him up in order to get that conversation between the two of you. That’s the approach I would take with the situation. It’s not an easy one, but that’s the only thing that usually gets those conversations to kind of build to a head to have the conversations to move forward and how you want to race each other.”

When asked if he believes Hocevar is a problem, Harvick answered, “He’s made some bad moves, right? He’s dumped some cars and put some guys in the fence and Carson’s made some bad moves.”

“I don’t think particular situation is his fault,” Harvick continued. “But I think that Carson has done a good job. He’s very fan friendly to trying to be creative and promote himself and do all those things, but he’s raced nobody any different. And a lot of that comes because nobody’s doing anything about it, Will. Nobody on the race track.”

Later in the segment, Harvick shared his advice on how Hocevar can improve, “The balance for Carson can be a little bit better. I don’t think he has to give up any of his aggressiveness. I don’t think he has to do anything different. Like on Saturday night, I don’t think he should have done anything different in that scenario when you’re doing the types of things that are happening. And when you’re in that position to where you feel like everybody is against you, you just got to make sure you’re circle is tight. And you got to have a great mental approach to every single week of how you’re going to approach the next question of this guy being mad at you, or that guy said this to you.”

“But, and I’ve said this before on this show and the Happy Hour show, there are those situations where you look at Carson, you’re like, ‘Man, that was a dumb move or a dumb scenario.’ And as long as he learns from those situations, he doesn’t have to give up any of his aggressiveness. And I think that that frustrates the other drivers because of the attention. It frustrates a lot of them because a lot of them have been on receiving the end of what has happened with either Carson makes a mistake or he makes an aggressive move. I don’t think you have to give up your aggressiveness with everything that is going on. I think you just to be from Carson’s standpoint, he can be that much smarter with his racecraft and when he’s doing those things to not take himself out of a race or not put himself in a position to get his car torn up or whatever it is.”

“You can be super aggressive in this sport and still not run over everybody,” Harvick declared.
