The Knoxville Nationals Saturday night finale is scheduled to go head-to-head with the NASCAR Cup Series again in 2027.
The NASCAR Cup Series released its full schedule for 2027 and revealed that the series will be competing on Saturday, August 14th at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Knoxville Nationals already announced that it would take place from August 11-14, 2027.
It is the second year in a row that the Knoxville Nationals will go up against the NASCAR Cup Series. The two were scheduled to go head-to-head this year when the NASCAR Cup Series had a Saturday night race at Richmond International Raceway.
The two races did not actually end up going head-to-head as the Knoxville Nationals were hit with a rain delay. That delay allowed Kyle Larson to finish the NASCAR race at Richmond with a sixth place finish, fly out to to Knoxville, and go on to win the race from the pole in dominating fashion.
Despite the conflict this year, Kyle Larson participated in the Knoxville Nationals preliminary and qualifying nights. He won his qualifying night and was also the high point man, which earned him the pole position for Saturday night.
Due to the conflict and weather conditions that looked good for both races, Larson had resigned himself to not competing in the Nationals. He shared in an interview with Winged Nation, “Jeff Andrews and Cliff [Daniels] were way more into trying to make it all happen than I was. Which I mean, if the weather had looked like it turned out to be, I probably would have been more on board with that, but I just thought that there was no chance of me even racing.”
Larson went on to describe how Daniels had planned out how he was going to get to Knoxville, but that he thought it was a pipe dream, “I’m like, ‘Hang on. It doesn’t even look like I can get there in time. So, no, relax. We don’t need to do that.’ And then he was like, ‘No, you need to be ready just in case.’ Again, I was like, ‘It’s fine. It’s not going to happen. Just chill.’ But sure enough it happened.”
While Larson had resigned himself to not competing on Saturday night, he did address critics, who questioned why he was competing to begin with knowing the scheduling conflict. He said, “I hope all the fans that were [whining] and moaning about us running a prelim night now understand why. So anybody watching at home, on the internet, in the stands, I hope you realize this was the best case scenario and this is exactly why we entered in the Knoxville Nationals.”
That remarkable 2026 outcome remains the exception rather than the rule. With the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol now confirmed for the same Saturday as the Knoxville Nationals finale in 2027, drivers like Larson who want to compete in the Knoxville Nationals, but have NASCAR commitments will face the same quandary he faced this year, where the hope to compete in both will be reliant on the weather.
