The World of Outlaws Late Model Series made its first visit to Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa, on Saturday night for the Harlan Late Model Showdown. Two of the series’ 2026 rookies, Logan Zarin of Hookstown, Pennsylvania, and Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Florida, found each other on the track and it did not end well for either of them. 

Mills started the race in 16th while Zarin started 12th and the two found each other on lap 12 of the 50-lap feature. While battling for the 11th position, Mills got to the inside of Zarin, who was running through the middle, as they dove into turn 3. The two came together and Zarin’s nose ended up in the door of Trey Mills and the two went for spin into turn 4. 

Both drivers would go to the rear of the field and never sniffed the top 10 again. Zarin ended up finishing 17th while Mills finished just two spots ahead in 15th.

Following the conclusion of the race, Zarin and his team posted to Facebook to express their displeasure with Mills regarding the wreck, “Running 9th tonight at Shelby County and got destroyed by the future yet again. Hate it for my sponsors we’ll move onto the world 100!”

For those not sure if Zarin is referring to Mills. Mills’ nickname is “The Future.”

Mills and his team put the blame on Zarin, ” Trey started 16th tonight and was making his way forward when, while running 12th on lap 12, the 11th-place car came down on him, taking them both out. “

“The team showed great speed tonight, and Trey was making a pass for position when the incident ended our charge to the front,” they added. “Unfortunately, the contact took us out of contention, but Trey and the team battled back to finish 15th. Not the finish we were hoping for, but there was definitely speed in the car tonight! We’ll regroup and keep digging!”

Zarin was in the hunt for one of his best finishes of the entire season with the Outlaws. While he won one of the split field races at Marion Center Raceway back in May, his best points paying finish was an 8th at Wayne County Speedway at the end of May.

Meanwhile, for Mills the finish saw him continue to lose ground to Daulton Wilson in the MD3 Rookie of the Year standings. Mills had a single point advantage heading into the trip to Iowa, but now that it has concluded he sees himself 96 points back after Wilson finished second.

Both drivers will get some time to reset and refocus. The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will take a three week break and will not return to action until the end of September for a doubleheader at I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park for the King of the Arch event on September 25th and 26th.

While the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will go on a three week break, the Dirt Late Model world will shift its focus to Eldora Speedway and the 56 World 100 that takes place from September 10-12. 48 cars have already registered for the event as of August 27th.
