Myles Moos announced that his Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year chase with the MARS Racing Series is over following the race at LaSalle Speedway on Thursday night.
Moos shared in a post to Facebook, “Well unfortunately it looks like our run with the MARS Racing Series came to an end tonight.”
“Chunk of mud came up and cleaned out the fan and belt. We tried to get a water pump belt on as fast as we could but it was too late,” he explained.
Moos started fifth in a stacked heat race that included Brandon Sheppard, Jason Feger, Shannon Babb, Frank Heckenast Jr., and Bob Gardner. Moos ended up finishing one spot out of the transfer after Gardner got around him on the opening lap.
While he failed to transfer out of his heat race, the sixth place finish set him up on the second row of the B-Main in third. On the opening lap, he quickly worked his way to second getting underneath Jeffrey Ledford. He then set his sights on Rich Bell and seemed on the verge of passing, driving underneath him through 1 and 2 with 7 laps left. However, a caution came out after Mark Voigt broke a driveshaft and Mike Provenzano spun to avoid a collision between Voigt and Dale Markham. On the next restart, Bell was able to keep Moos behind him, who tried to peek to his outside a couple times, but eventually settled for second.
During that B-Main, white smoke was billowing out of the back of Moos’ car. When it was feature time, Moos never made it out to the track given the engine issue.
Moos was third in the Rookie of the Year standings heading into the race at LaSalle, 268 points behind leader Dylan Thornton. He was 9th in the series overall standings, 376 behind leader Ryan Unzicker. However, he was within striking distance of 7th place as Tanner English, who was in 7th, was only 6 points ahead of him. Jeffrey Ledford was only 2 points ahead of him in 8th.
Moos has had a trying Rookie season with the MARS Racing Series. He started the year off in the Brent McKinnon owned 26M, but switched back to his family-owned No. 84 in the middle of July. He blew a motor in that car during the Summer Nationals race earlier in the month at Macon during the Pepsi Herald & Review 100.
Before the trip to LaSalle, Moos had a tough weekend at Benton Speedway where he had his air cleaner knocked off after getting caught up in a wreck on the opening lap of his heat race. Matt Cooper spun into the outside wall after contact from Tanner English. After making contact with the wall, his rear lifted up and his car then nearly tipped over. While Cooper was standing on just his two left side tires, Moos had nowhere to go and crashed into him. Cooper’s car came down on top off Moos’ hood.
After making repairs, Moos started the feature in 19th and had driven through the field up to fifth. On a restart with 17 laps left, Ryan Unzicker got into left rear quarter panel of Rodney Melvin and spun around on the bottom of the track. Moos, again, had nowhere to go and slammed into the side of the spun Unzicker. He then got smashed into by both Jake Little and Bob Gardner. The contact saw Moos come to a stop standing perpendicular on his right side tires.
While Moos seemingly announced that his run with the MARS Racing Series is coming to an end due to the engine issue, it is a possibility that he gets another engine and can continue. It’s not out of the realm of possibility and we saw it happen earlier this year with Cody Overton when he blew two motors during Speedweeks. He initially posted, “Racing can be cruel sometimes. Unfortunately, our Speedweeks are over before they truly began after failures in both of our motors last night.”
“We’ll take a few weeks to regroup, reset, and get ready for the next chapter. This team doesn’t quit,” he concluded.
However, less than 8 hours later he shared an update revealing he had got another engine. He wrote, “
