After losing the lead earlier in the race, some patience paid off for Sid Harmer Jr. on Saturday at Autodrome Drummond.
The Governeur, NY driver snuck past Bastien Caron to get the lead back with nine laps remaining and held on to score his third career DIRTcar Pro Stock Series win, and first since 2019.
Dakota Sharp led the field to the green in the 50-lap Feature, getting ahead of Samuel Lajoie on the race’s opening lap. However, Harmer started moving forward in a battle with Lajoie, eventually getting by him for second on Lap 13.
It wasn’t long before Harmer challenged Sharp for the lead, as he took it away from the No. 12 on Lap 15. Harmer got out to a two-second advantage, but the race’s first yellow flag came out on Lap 23, bringing the field back to him.
That’s when it looked like Harmer’s chance for a win slipped away, as Lajoie used the restart to drive by the No. 14R. Luckily for Harmer, he’d get another chance before the race was over.
Lajoie had issues on Lap 35, which cost him the win and brought out another caution. Caron, who was in second, inherited the lead from Lajoie, but it put him next to Harmer, who joined him on the front row for the restart.
When the green came back out, Caron held the lead for the next five laps with Harmer looking for every chance to get by. That opportunity finally came on Lap 41, when Harmer drove past Caron’s No. 73 and into the lead.
From there, Harmer held on to score his first Series win outside of Mohawk International Raceway—one that earned him $1,400 (Canadian).
Caron, from Inverness, QC, crossed the line second, narrowly missing out on a win at Drummond for the second straight season.
Jason Casey charged to the final podium spot after starting 12th. It’s the Canaan, CT driver’s best Series finish since Brewerton Speedway last year during SummerFAST.
Six-time and defending DIRTcar Pro Stock Series champion Pete Stefanski finished fourth, becoming the only driver to finish in the top five in both Series events so far. The North Tonawanda, NY driver leaves Drummond with a four-point lead over Casey in the Series standings.
Gabriel Caouette, from Arthabaska, QC, rounded out the top five, earning his best career Series finish in three starts.
UP NEXT: The DIRTcar Pro Stock Series returns to action on Sunday, May 31, for a stop at Cornwall Motor Speedway in Long Sault, ON. Drivers will battle in another 50-lap Feature with $1,500 (Canadian) on the line.
