Here’s a look at what to watch for at Weedsport:
Tristan’s Consistency: After three races in this year’s chase for the DIRTcar Sportsman Series Championship, no one has been more consistent than Tristan Ladouceur.
The Alexandria, ON driver has finished in the top five in all three events, including a third at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park, a fifth at Utica-Rome Speedway, and a fourth at Ransomville Speedway last week. Entering this week’s Sportsman Classic, he has a 26-point lead over Richard Murtaugh III in the Series standings.
While Ladouceur is searching for his first career Series win, Weedsport last year was where he came the closest to earning that victory. He led 70 laps in last year’s Sportsman Classic before ultimately finishing third.
Fighting for Three: In 11 Sportsman Classics held at Weedsport, only two drivers have won the event more than once. Current DIRTcar 358 Modified star Dave Marcuccilli is one of them, winning the event three times in 2015, 2017, and 2018. The other is Murtaugh, who won in 2023 and 2024.
After a runner-up finish last week at Ransomville, Murtaugh aims to bring that momentum to a place he’s found success. The two Sportsman Classic victories are two of his nine Series triumphs. However, he’s had mixed results at Weedsport over the past two seasons.
He has two fifth-place finishes during Central Region events but finished 17th in last year’s Sportsman Classic. Murtaugh also finished 12th in the DIRTcar Sportsman event as part of SummerFAST last month but led the race before a mechanical failure cost him the win.
Weedsport Momentum: This weekend’s Sportsman Classic will be the third Sportsman event at Weedsport in 2026, with Hunter Hollenbeck and Tony Finch II each earning victories.
Hollenbeck scored his win in the DIRTcar Sportsman Series Central Region opener in May, while Finch earned the win during SummerFAST. Finch, from Pennellville, NY, also earned a Championship Season win at Utica-Rome Speedway later that week, one of three drivers, along with Derrick McGrew Jr. and Cody McPherson, to accomplish that feat.
Those triumphs are two of Finch’s six wins this season, along with three victories at Brewerton Speedway and one at Thunder Mountain Speedway. He finished 28th in last year’s Sportsman Classic.
Hollenbeck, meanwhile, has seven victories this season, earning four wins at Brewerton Speedway and two wins at Fulton Speedway. The Fulton, NY driver finished sixth in last year’s Sportsman Classic.
