Tanner Mullens and Shadren Turner split a pair of USRA Heartland Modified Tour victories during Labor Day at the Lake, with Mullens capturing Saturday’s Jason Russell Memorial before Turner returned for redemption in Sunday night’s weekend finale at Lake Ozark Speedway.

The two drivers were at the center of the action throughout the weekend. Mullens prevailed following a tense, multi-lap battle with Turner on Saturday, while Turner answered Sunday by taking command from Bobby Williams on lap seven and leading the remainder of the 25-lap Pannell Chipping A-Feature.

Mullens Captures Jason Russell Memorial

Turner started Saturday’s 32-lap Jason Russell Memorial from the pole and controlled the race through its opening stages. Mullens, who started third, worked his way forward and eventually closed in on the race-long leader.

What followed was a sustained battle between the pair, with Mullens repeatedly challenging the No. 56 before finally completing the pass on lap 21. Once in front, Mullens held Turner at bay to secure his sixth USRA Heartland Modified Tour victory of the season.

Turner finished second after leading the majority of the event, while Ryan Middaugh completed the podium in third.

Chad Lyle delivered the charge of the night, racing from the 18th starting position to finish fourth. Defending Jason Russell Memorial winner Trevor Hughes rounded out the top five.

Championship leader Tyler Davis finished sixth, followed by Wyatt Gaggero, Bobby Williams, Jason Pursley and Rick Beebe.

Mullens began the evening by earning the Deatherage Opticians Overall Quick Time Award with a lap of 15.754 seconds. He then won the opening Rick Beebe Heating and Air Conditioning Heat Race.

Turner claimed the Smith Equipment Company Heat Race, while Henry Chambers won the Kevko Racing Heat Race. The evening concluded with the 32-lap Jason Russell Memorial presented by Pannell Chipping.

Turner Completes Sunday Redemption

After coming one position short Saturday, Turner left nothing on the table in Sunday’s Labor Day weekend finale.

Turner once again earned the pole position but initially gave way to outside front-row starter Bobby Williams. Williams led the opening six circuits before Turner made his move on lap seven.

Once Turner reclaimed the top spot, the Kansas City, Kansas, driver never looked back. He controlled the remainder of the caution-free 25-lap Pannell Chipping A-Feature to earn his first HMT victory of the season.

Hughes advanced from fourth to finish second, while Saturday winner Mullens moved from sixth to complete the podium. Williams settled for fourth after leading the opening six laps, with Davis completing the top five.

Dean Wille finished sixth, followed by Chambers, Gaggero, Pursley and Beebe.

Turner swept Sunday’s preliminary program, earning the Deatherage Opticians Overall Quick Time Award with a 15.288-second lap before winning the Rick Beebe Heating and Air Conditioning Heat Race. Williams captured the Smith Equipment Company Heat Race.

Championship Battle Tightens

With 14 events completed, Davis continues to lead the USRA Heartland Modified Tour championship standings with 1,171 points. However, only 43 points separate the top three drivers.

Hughes moved within 37 points of Davis following finishes of fifth and second at Lake Ozark. Mullens, despite competing in two fewer events than the championship leaders, sits only six points behind Hughes and 43 behind Davis after collecting his series-leading sixth victory of the season.

Coleman remains fourth with 1,046 points, while Gaggero trails him by only two points

in fifth.

Turner’s second-place finish and Sunday victory moved him to sixth in the standings with 979 points.
