Tanner Thorson earned arguably the biggest win of his sprint car career on Saturday night at the 16th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.
Banking a $25,000 payday, the Minden, Nevada native added his name to an iconic champions list of the Lucas Oil Speedway staple – becoming the eighth different winged winner over the last eight years at “The Diamond of Dirt Tracks.”
Fresh off Friday’s win at the Wheatland, Missouri oval, Thorson started Saturday’s 35-lapper from the third spot and quickly surged past Brent Marks to take control of the lead on Lap 5. From there, the JST Motorsports pilot never looked back en route to his seventh-career win with Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing.
The score marked his fifth series triumph of the season and already his third in the month of September as new car owners Jason & Shantel Tessier continue to enjoy the luxury of Whiskey Myers Victory Lane with crew members Brinton Marvel and T.J. Nichols, who got to celebrate an emotional victory in the race honoring his late cousin, Jesse Hockett.
Coming from sixth-to-second and pressuring Thorson in the late stages was Thursday’s winner, Tyler Courtney. “Sunshine” settled for runner-up honors while easily scoring the weeklong Hockett/McMillin Hard Charger Award by passing 30 cars across the three nights in his Clauson-Marshall Racing #7BC.
Giovanni Scelzi finished third aboard the Chili’s Grill & Bar #77, earning Spire Motorsports their eighth podium of the season as they approach the Ridge & Sons Racing #87 piloted by Aaron Reutzel for second in the High Limit championship down the stretch.
Closing out the top-five on Saturday was championship leader Rico Abreu in his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #24 and Brent Marks in the Chase Briscoe Racing #19.
Rounding out the top-10 at the Hockett/McMillin Memorial was Scott Bogucki in sixth, Tanner Holmes in seventh, Ryan Newton in eighth, Aaron Reutzel in ninth, and Joel Myers Jr. in tenth.
