Tyler Carpenter is one of the most exciting drivers in Dirt Late Model racing, and one of the reasons for that is the slide jobs he throws at places like the Gateway Dirt Nationals.
Carpenter discussed slide jobs and their etiquette with StockCarReport.com ahead of the World 100 at Eldora Speedway. When asked what the proper etiquette is for a slide job at The Dome at America’s Center, he answered, “No such thing. Just take what you can get. Even if it ain’t there just go and get it.”
From there, he was asked what his best slide job was. He responded, “I guess one that didn’t quite take the air filter off. Anything you kinda clear is pretty good, I guess. … Man, it’s all chaos out there. There’s no such thing as a good slider there. You know what you’re doing, so when you enter the corner you know you’re pretty well going to—. Only clean slider there is one, I’d say, clean across their hood.”
While he takes a no-holds-barred approach to sliders at The Dome, he has a different approach at other tracks. “Most racers know what they’re doing. So if you’re pulling a ballsy move and you think it’s going to be iffy, it’s going to be iffy.”
“Hey, we race, we all do it,” he added. “We all make stupid decisions, and at the end of the day that’s why they call it racing.”
Carpenter also discussed a number of other topics including whether he plans to potentially race with either the World of Outlaws Late Models or the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. The short answer is no.
He explained, “No, not on my own. Not at all. It’s always been on my mind, but at the end of the day, financially, you got to be realistic about it and it’s just not on my agenda.”
However, he was open to running more with the Summer Nationals next year. “Stuff like that, that’s more realistic. That’s doable, feasible, I guess. But at the end of the day, I do everything on my own for the most part. I do got some good sponsors that do help me, but 90% of it’s out of my own pocket.”
Carpenter showed up at one Summer Nationals race this past year at Wayne County Speedway and took home the win.
Finally, he talked about whether he might continue with Cody Sommer and his Race DRT team after their success at the World 100.
Carpenter shared, “We’re going to play it by ear. We both like working with each other. He’s got a good thing going. I do too to an extent. We just try to have fun and try to make a statement for both of us.”
