Before the green flag ever waved, Tyler Davis admitted he felt like the luck simply hadn’t been on his side. Thirty laps later, there was no doubt the championship leader had finally turned the corner.

For the first time in 2026, Davis parked his familiar No. 65 in Heartland Modified Tour Victory Lane Friday night at Humboldt Speedway, extending his remarkable streak of top-five finishes to a perfect 9-for-9 while finally converting consistent speed into the victory that had narrowly eluded him all season.

As the series returned to the place where the 2026 season began it was fitting that the championship leader finally found his way back to Victory Lane.

Starting on the outside of the front row Davis wasted little time taking command, driving around polesitter Dakota Dale exiting turn two to lead the opening lap of the 30-lap Pannell Chipping A-Feature. While two cautions during the opening two circuits prevented the race from finding an early rhythm, Davis proved nearly flawless on every restart.

Behind the leader, Dale found himself under constant pressure from Mark Dotson, Henry Chambers, and Chevy Coleman as the battle for the podium intensified. Just three laps after the early cautions, Chambers and Dotson were locked in a spirited fight when Dotson spun in turn three, bringing out the Midwest Sheet Metal caution flag.

Another caution involving Dotson and Steven Glenn with 23 laps remaining once again erased Davis’ advantage, but each restart produced the same result—the No. 65 quickly opened breathing room over the field.

The biggest challenge came from Henry Chambers.

Using the cushion around the top of the Humboldt Speedway surface, Chambers steadily reeled Davis back in, keeping the point leader firmly within striking distance through the middle stages of the race. But as Chambers repeatedly flirted with the concrete retaining wall while searching for speed, the punishment eventually caught up with the No. 17 machine. Apparent rear suspension damage forced Chambers to retire with just 12 laps remaining, ending what had been one of the night’s strongest performances.

That opened the door for another Wichita driver.

On the final restart, Wyatt Gaggero immediately moved to the high side, following the same line Chambers had used to pressure Davis. Gaggero proved especially strong through turns one and two, gradually closing the gap before nearly losing control with just six laps remaining. That mistake ultimately proved to be the deciding moment, as Gaggero mounted one final charge but fell just short of catching the 65.

Davis crossed beneath the checkered flag for his first Heartland Modified Tour victory of the season, though far from his first career series triumph, ending months of near misses in convincing fashion.

Chevy Coleman completed the podium in third, while Shadren Turner and Tanner Mullens delivered two of the biggest drives on the night.  Turner went 17th to fourth while Mullens went 20th to fifth.  Impressive as those two drives were, Trevor Hughes claimed PEM Hard Charger honors gaining 16 positions on the night starting 24th and finishing 8th.

Relief More Than Celebration

After coming painfully close on several occasions throughout the season, Davis admitted the victory carried more relief than anything else.

“It’s a relief, man,” Davis said in Victory Lane. “We got an ass kicking this year and last year, and we work really hard. I put my heart and soul in these race cars, and sometimes the world don’t treat you right. But we’ve got good people behind us, and I’m really excited to finally get back here. It’s been too long. You know, second, third, fourth every night, and finally it feels good to finally put one together.”

Despite leading much of the race, Davis said the constant cautions forced him to continually adjust his approach.

“I altered my entry and my exit several times. I felt like we were parking it coming off four because it went from moisture to slick over there. You were just trying to keep the tires underneath it and keep it straight. Down in turns one and two, you just had to drive your ass off. Humboldt’s a badass racetrack. We always love coming here, and thanks to John for putting a really good racetrack together.”

As competitors searched for grip around the progressively changing racing surface, Davis explained why he stayed committed to the lower groove while keeping an eye on the developing cushion.

“I thought the top would come in as the bottom slicked up a little more. It wasn’t really hammer down—it was patchy and tricky, and you had to stay on your toes. The bottom started to go away, so I’d just drive the car straight up the racetrack and try to catch whatever moisture was left up top. We’ve got a really good group of guys behind us… We’ve been really good lately, we just never could close it. So it’s a very big relief to finally close it.”

The evening began with Mark Dotson setting the pace during Central Spray Foam & Cement Lifting Hot Laps before backing it up with Deatherage Opticians Quick Time honors with a lap of 15.687 seconds. Heat race victories went to Dotson in the Rick Beebe Heating & Air Conditioning Heat One, Davis in the Smith Equipment Company Heat Two, Dakota Dale in the Kevko Racing Heat Three, and Chevy Coleman in the Swift Springs Heat Four. Shadren Turner earned PEM Hard Charger honors after advancing 13 positions from 17th to fourth.

With Friday’s victory, Davis not only strengthened his grip atop the championship standings, but also kept intact one of dirt modified racing’s most impressive streaks—ten starts, ten top-five finishes—heading into Saturday night’s Heartland Modified Tour finale at Valley Speedway.
