Trey Mills not only saw his night at Southern Iowa Speedway come to an end after he flipped over down the back stretch, but he was subsequently disqualified as well.

On lap 14 of the 35-lap feature, Mills flipped over on the backstretch in front of the race leaders. In fact, race leader Dustin Sorensen locked up his brakes and spun into the wall to avoid Mills’ car that had come to a stop on its lid in the middle of the race track.

Mills would climb from the car and walk away from the wreck.

However, following the wreck, Mills was disqualified. In a comment on Facebook, the series explained why, “A crew member on the No. 14 team entered the racetrack following the incident, which violates Series rules and resulted in the disqualification.”

A World of Outlaws Late Model Series official confirmed to StockCarReport.com that a crew member entering the racetrack was the reason why Mills was disqualified. As for what the disqualification entails, the official shared, “Everything is the same as it would be if he finished last naturally.” In this case, last was 23rd in the running order. That means he still received $1,000 in start money and 104 championship points.

The disqualification saw Mills slip back to 9th in the World of Outlaws Late Models Points standings behind Dennis Erb Jr.. Additionally, he is now trailing Daulton Wilson by 71 points in the MD3 Rookie of the Year standings. Mills had a single point advantage heading into the trip to Iowa, but Wilson put together two solid 7th place runs to retake the lead and gap Mills by 33 points. While Wilson put together two solid runs, Mills struggled finishing 18th and 13th. 

Wilson put together an even stronger run at Southern Iowa Speedway finishing just off the podium in fourth while Mills received the disqualification. That more than doubled Wilson’s lead in the MD3 Rookie of the Year standings.

Mills will look to rebound as the Outlaws conclude their trip to Iowa this weekend with stops at Adams County Speedway on Friday, August 28th and Shelby County Speedway on Saturday, August 29th.
