Anthony Macri and his team shared an update on his health after he was involved in a horrific crash during the Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway on Sunday night.
On the opening lap of Heat 4, Brady Bacon and Anthony Macri collided in the middle of turn 1 with Bacon’s left front making contact with Macri’s right rear. The contact sent both cars flying into the outside wall. After smashing the wall, Macri’s car began flipping down the track before coming to a stop on its side with only the chassis remaining.

Following the wreck, Brady Bacon talked to DIRTVision’s Wade Aunger about the wreck. He said, “Kyle [Larson] got a good start, kinda drove across my nose to get to the top and then I was going to try to turn down and Anthony was down there and I think he was going to go the opposite direction and we just met in the middle. A lot of good cars here and you got to go on that first corner. Everyone’s going for it. And yeah, it was just a bad deal, racing deal. We met in the middle. Definitely hope he’s alright. He definitely can’t afford any more bumps. But we’re alright. We’re going to check everything out and see if we got to bring out a new one for the Nationals or if we can fix this one.”
After being asked if he’d seen the replay, Bacon replied, “Yeah, I saw it. That’s kinda what I thought happened. You know I was going to try to turn down and I think he was going to try to drive across and we just met in the middle.”
Macri and his team shared an update on his health in a post to Facebook this afternoon. The team shared that he “was taken to the hospital last night following the accident at Knoxville. After evaluation, he was diagnosed with a broken clavicle and a bruised lung. He is in some pain today, but is doing well and remains in good spirits.”
“He’s understandably disappointed to be sidelined from the car again, but he’s staying positive and focused on the road ahead,” the team continued. “We also can’t thank our safety equipment manufacturers enough, along with XXX Chassis, for building a race car that did its job when it mattered most. Last night was a hard reminder of just how important quality safety equipment and a properly built race car are.”
