Coles County Speedway announced it is making a change to its Road to the Dome registration for the event’s second year. 

The track shared it will have Open Registration, but with a twist. It explained in a post to Facebook that both the Super Late Model and Modified Divisions will be capped at a 60-car maximum field. The first 45 registration spots for both classes will be first come, first served. Registration costs $75 and is only secured once payment is received.

However, the remaining 15 spots “will be reserved by the promoter to help complete the strongest and most competitive field possible. Once the first 45 spots are filled, additional entries will be placed on an official waiting list. Any unused reserved entries will be released prior to the event.”

Registration for the event is currently open and will run through August 27th at 8:00 AM.

The track had previously announced in March that it would cap both classes at 60 cars, but that everyone who competed in the inaugural show last year would be automatically locked. Additionally, the winners of the MARS Championship races in May at the track would be locked in as well. Those races were won by Matthew Baker in the Modifieds and Brandon Sheppard in the Late Models.

Furthermore, the track indicated that it would choose 25 competitors from each class and then the final 20 spots would be chosen by fans during a live drawing. It appears that this has been overridden by the most recent announcement. StockCarReport.com has inquired if any of the previous announcements still apply.

Like last year, the event will take place at the end of September. It is on the track’s schedule for Sunday, September 27th.

The first annual Road to the Dome attracted 15 super late models with Mike Spatola besting Brandon Sheppard. Others who participated in the race included Daniel Adam, Kade Ballinger, Chevy Boyer, AJ Cooley, Jason Feger, Chris Ferguson, Derek Fetter, Bob Gardner, Rusty Griffaw, Gordy Gundaker, Trevor Gundaker, Steve Sheppard, and Jason Wagner.

Since the inaugural Road to the Dome, Coles County has put on a couple of other marquee super late model races with both the MARS Championship and the Summer Nationals. The MARS back on May 17th won the Sweet Mfg. Race of the Week on FloRacing. 

Brandon Sheppard won the race after an epic battle with Ryan Unzicker and Tanner English. Sheppard had high praise for the track, “I just love short track racing. … Obviously, they know what they’re doing here. The track prep is really good throughout the night. Super narrow, but it’s kind of slippery, and, patchy, and dirty, and little bit of everything going on out there. You can really move around. When you’re leading there you don’t really know exactly where to go. … We definitely, we all made a little bit of contact, but I think that’s inevitable at a place like this, especially coming off four here, super narrow.”

“They’ve obviously done a bunch of work to this place and made the grandstands and the facility really nice. Obviously, we’re going to keep coming back, so I figure I might as well keep supporting them.”

After his Summer Nationals win at the track, Jason Feger had similar praise, “Man, how about it Coles County? I mean, what a heck of a job these guys did prepping that track especially considering the weather they had this week and stuff. Man, it was good. Every time we’ve come here it just keeps getting better and better. It’s awesome to see the stands full of people and appreciate everybody coming out and supporting it, Brian for what he’s trying to do here.”

“Man, we just love bullring racing. It’s so awesome. It’s a lot of fun!”
